GLENDALE, Ariz  —  The Arizona State University (ASU) Sun Devils men’s D1 hockey team were pummeled 8-0 at Gila River Arena Friday night in their first game of a two game home series with Boston University (BU) Terriers.

ASU is coming off a home weekend against Quinnipiac University. The Terriers are 3-1-1 in the new calendar year.

Arizona State head coach Greg Powers had very little to say after the game.

“It was a weird game,” he said.

BU got off to a quick start capitalizing on a five minute major penalty taken by Johnny Walker (served by Tyler Busch). Bobo Carpenter blasted a shot from the point past goalie Joey Daccord four minutes into the game.

This would be the least of ASU’s worries. With two-and-a-half minutes left in the frame, a point shot by BU’s Cam Crotty tipped in front of Daccord led to an easy rebound goal for Hank Crone. Then 90 seconds later, a lost battle in front for a loose puck allowed Brady Tkachuk to pound home the Terrier’s third goal. Finally, a quick 20 seconds after that, Shane Bowers scored off a screwed deflection off the boards behind Daccord to put BU up four goals going into the second period.

Troubles continued for the Sun Devils in the second. At almost the same time as his first period goal, Carpenter tipped a long shot from John MacLeod off the post in behind Daccord. 5-0 Terriers. Another shot from the point led to Chase Phelps putting home to a rebound make it 6-0.

With 50 seconds left in the period, Tkachuk put home his second goal of the night on a powerplay.

Back-up goaltender Mike DePhillips relieved Daccord of his duties to start the third period. This is the second game in a row at Gila River Arena where Daccord has been pulled. DePhillips remained solid throughout the first half of the period until Carpenter finished his hat-trick to give the Terriers an eight goal lead.

It would end to be ASU’s worst loss of the season. Final shots were 41 to 23 in favor of the Terriers. The Sun Devils will take on BU Saturday night and honor their seniors before the game.
