TEMPE, Ariz  —  The Arizona State University Sun Devils NCAA men’s hockey jumped out to an explosive start in the second game of their two game series against the UMASS-Lowell Riverhawks in an eventual 4-0 win.

“That’s a huge win for our program,” said Sun Devil head coach Greg Powers, “it’s good when our guys have good habits and play the right way.”

The Sun Devils were leaving a trail of Riverhawks all over the ice in the first period.

Despite killing off three late period penalties, the offensive pressure sustained by ASU allowed Joey Ratts to rifle a wide open wrist shot past UMASS-Lowell goaltender, Christoffer Hernberg. with 54 seconds left in the first to give the Sun Devils the lead.

ASU continued to pressure the Riverhawks in the second period as freshman Johnny Walker started off the period with a nifty backhand move on a breakaway to put the Sun Devils ahead by two goals.

Nearly three minutes later, Walker banged home a loose rebound at the end of an ASU power-play.

Goalie Joey Daccord recorded his first ever collegiate shutout, finishing with 28 saves.

“It has been almost two years now,” explained Daccord, “It felt really good to get the monkey off the back.”

Daccord stayed solid in the second period even though UMASS-Lowell peppered him with long shots from the blue line in an attempt to sneak one past him.

The same could not be said for Hernberg, as David Norris tipped a Tyler Busch shot from the point with under 20 seconds left in the period.

The Riverhawks became desperate in the third, but Daccord stayed strong as did the Sun Devils in front of him. ASU has not lost consecutive home games all season.

The Sun Devils are home throughout the month of January with games against Quinnipiac University and Boston University. The Quinnipiac series begins next Friday at Oceanside Ice Arena and the Saturday game will be played at Gila River Arena. The games can be heard on Blaze Radio Mixlr.
