TV Messages, The Fiends, and Miserable Ghost played at Trunk Space on February 11th, 2023. Trunk Space is a non-profit, all-ages venue located in Grace Lutheran Church, in Downtown Phoenix. TV Messages is a Phoenix-based band consisting of lead vocalist and guitarist Kaili Orcutt, bassist Tanner Bontrager, guitarist Pablo Cruz, and drummer Scott Kelston. Their music can be described as dreamy pop-rock. The Fiends and Miserable Ghost are both hardcore punk bands.
TV Messages always delivers an emotionally captivating performance, with introspective lyrics and irresistible melodies. TV Messages always engages their crowd with their dynamic as a band. Their dynamic is cohesive and interactive, with each member having their own unique stage presence. They played one of their hit songs, “Mental Masturbation,” which delivers an addictive yet laid-back melody. They also debuted their newest single, “Magic Marlene” with raw lead vocals anchoring this slower song. The crowd’s energy was perked up when they played faster songs like “La La La,” which brought the audience to dance.
I enjoyed this performance and the audience did as well, with people dancing the entire time. During the show, lead singer Kaili announced that this would be Tanner’s last show. Although this made the mood bittersweet, the energy was still pumping. Although it was his last performance, TV Messages will continue to play shows together in the future, with new member and bassist Clay Andrew Bailey.
