Flo Milli Brings the Heat to InfernoFest

Flo Milli kicked off the start of the 2024 school year with a fiery performance at InfernoFest. On Tuesday, August 20, Arizona State University held its annual InfernoFest with special guest performer and rapper Flo Milli live at the Mountain America Stadium in Tempe.

InfernoFest is a free concert for ASU students hosted by the Programming Activities Board (PAB) and the Residence Hall Association (RHA) to welcome Sun Devils to the new school year. The concert has boasted artists such as Jack Harlow, Wallows and Ferg, who performed at last year’s InfernoFest.

Flo Milli graced the stage in a bedazzled black bodysuit and fur boots, singing her self-titled track “FLO MILLI.” According to Genius, the song includes samples and interpolations from Lil Wayne’s “A Milli” and “Say My Name” by Destiny’s Child, which allowed her to introduce herself to the audience cleverly.

The Alabama rapper then went on to play some of her hits, including “Bed Time” and “Beef FloMix,” a song of which she gained wide popularity when she released it on SoundCloud in 2018, and it went viral on TikTok in 2019, according to RCA Records. “Beef FloMix” was a crowd favorite at InfernoFest, as Sun Devils knew the rap word for word.

According to Billboard, Flo Milli, born Tamia Monique Carter, grew up in Mobile, Alabama and wrote one of her first songs when she was nine. She started rapping at the age of 11 and formed a rap group called “Real & Beautiful,” later renamed “Pink Mafia.” After the success of “Beef FloMix,” Flo Milli released various singles, including “In The Party,” which appeared on her debut mixtape. By 2020, she was nominated for “Best New Artist” at the BET Hip Hop Awards. Since then, she has released two studio albums and has collaborated with various artists.

At InfernoFest, Flo Milli played various songs, ranging from her debut mixtape to her most recent album and collaborations. Some of the collaboration songs that she played were Baby Tate’s “I Am (feat. Flo Milli)” and Latto’s “Sunday Service (Feat. Megan Thee Stallion & Flo Milli).”

“Conceited” was another highlight of her performance when she asked the students to shine their flashlights, lighting up the stadium.

Makia Elliott, a senior at ASU who attended Flo Milli’s set, shared that she enjoyed the performance and wanted to see “a lot more black artists…or just a diverse [range]” of artists performing at ASU.

Flo Milli closed out the night with her 2023 single, “Never Lose Me,” and expressed her gratitude toward the audience.

“I love you all so much. Thank you for having me,” she said.

With a history of notable artists, Sun Devils will surely speculate about who will be performing next year.
