The Arizona State Sun Devils are 4-1 for the first time since 2019, and will get that hot start tested as the #16 ranked Utah Utes come to town for a Friday night showdown.
ASU is coming off a gritty comeback win against the Kansas Jayhawks, coming away with a 35-31 victory thanks to a game-winning connection from Sam Leavitt to Jordyn Tyson, one of four touchdowns on the night from Leavitt.
Sun Devil Head Coach Kenny Dillingham praised Leavitt’s work ethic in practice the week before the game, saying it contributed to his success on the field.
“That was his best week of prep,” Dillingham said. “He was really clean.”
Running back Cam Skattebo was also very impressive in the win, taking 25 carries for 182 yards and a touchdown. The strong performance continues what has been another electric year from the senior back.
Skattebo said he didn’t really focus on the numbers he was accumulating, and instead was just focused on the next play.
“The guys up front did a great job, kept pushing, and we were just focused on one thing, and it was moving the ball,” Skattebo said.
ASU also had to overcome two controversial targeting calls during the game. Due to NCAA rules, both of the players hit with the calls, linebacker Keyshaun Elliot and defensive lineman Clayton Smith, will also be out during the first half of their game against Utah.
Dillingham said he has talked to officials in the Big 12 about rulings that he did not understand.
"I’m a rules guy, so I ask a lot of questions as to why certain things are called certain ways, and I had some questions about things that didn’t go our way,” Dillingham said.
He declined to specify what his questions were or what answers he received.
Utah on the other hand is coming off a bye week after losing their first game of the season the week prior to Arizona. Freshman quarterback Isaac Wilson struggled against the Wildcats’ defense in the place of starter Cam Rising, completing only 20 of his 40 passes for 280 yards, a touchdown and two picks.
Utah has built a hard nosed reputation under head coach Kyle Whittingham, and the Sun Devils will need to match their physicality in order to pull off an upset.
“That coach gets those guys to play with passion, and they got good players over there,” Skattebo said.
“They’re going to say we’re better than you, and it’s going to be mono y mono, and we just got to win,” Leavitt said.
The crowd in Mountain America Stadium in the game versus Kansas brought the energy, and Skattebo hopes they do the same with a ranked opponent in the desert.
“It’s awesome,” Skattebo said. “It obviously can get better, but it’s been great.”
Kickoff will be at 7:30 pm and can be heard live on Blaze Radio.
