Going "Insane" with DPR

On Monday, Sept. 16. Dreamers, the fanbase, were lined up around the Arizona Financial Theater, in Phoenix, Arizona, waiting to go insane with the Dream Perfect Regime (DPR) crew for their Dream Reborn World Tour.

Dream Perfect Regime, or DPR, is a record label based in Seoul, South Korea, consisting of four artists DPR Ian (Christian Yu), DPR Cream (Kim Kyung-mo), DPR Live (Hong Da-bin) and DPR Arctic (Kim Yong-woo). They are “a multi-genre music and video group” that aims to “engage all audiences by actualizing a distinctive audiovisual experience,” according to their website.

When the clock struck eight, Dreamers were met with a video featuring an alien-like figure, who introduced the fans to a new reality they would be venturing into. The set began with an “escape” (“Escape” by DPR Arctic) into an EDM rave with DPR’s latest edition, DPR Arctic. He is a producer and DJ from South Korea who released his debut album, “KINEMA,” on Feb. 2, 2024.

The background featured a bright blue galaxy theme as DPR Arctic walked onstage. Throughout his set, multi-colored light beams and visuals energized the crowd. Following the end of the rave was an upbeat hip-hop and rap set with DPR Cream. Although I was unfamiliar with DPR Arctic and Cream’s music, the unexpected genre switch became exhilarating to experience.

After DPR Cream’s “savage” finish of his newest release, “Savage”, the fans chanted, “DPR IAN! DPR IAN! DPR IAN!” However, instead of jumping right into the act, a black screen appeared, and fans were forced to wait for what seemed like a century. As soon as the silhouette of DPR Ian appeared, and the track to the song “Don’t Go Insane” started playing, I finally went insane.

The main screen displayed the words, “Welcome to the Other side”,  as the music played, which was then followed by DPR Ian’s electric guitar solo. His set featured captivating choreography with bright visuals and special effects. Fans were on their feet, waving their camera flashlights and light sticks. At one-point, DPR Ian wore black wings that slowly propped open as a solar eclipse passed by in the background. The moment was so cinematically unforgettable that I felt I had “ventured too far off” (“Famous Last Words” by DPR Ian) into another reality.

Although only three of the four that make DPR joined the world tour, each act felt as if I were traveling from one reality to another. From the techno and hip-hop rave that DPR Arctic performed, to the rap and hip-hop beat of DPR Cream, and finally finishing off with the R&B and soul that defines DPR Ian, it felt like I was in a “dream” (“Dream” by DPR Arctic).

To finish the show, DPR Ian ran out singing “Do or Die,” a collaboration between him and DPR Arctic. As DPR Ian came out, DPR Cream and Arctic, along with the dancers and production team all went on stage to bid farewell.

“It’s our first time here [in Phoenix] but it definitely won’t be our last,” DPR Ian said.
