Local pastors at Mercy Hill Church have been able to fulfill their goals as pastors by helping out the local community.
Mercy Hill Church is a church located on the outskirts of Downtown Phoenix. The church offers services such as live Spanish translations and partners with Christian Challenge, a club located on the ASU Downtown Phoenix campus to help give students and Spanish-speaking people a nearby connection and group that they can go to in times of need.
Anthony Cox’s family is Christian, and he found his calling with religion throughout his early life. It all began with his choice for a senior year trip. He could either do a senior trip with all of his friends from high school or do a mission trip where he could continue his journey of faith and spread it to third-world environments.
He decided to go on an overseas mission trip in 1998. That mission not only made him realize his love for preaching and spreading the word of Jesus Christ, but it also led him to meet the love of his life, and one year later, they married in 2001. Now, Cox is a co-vocational pastor at Mercy Hill Church.
“We hope you feel welcomed and wanted,” Cox said.
Skyler Cook is also co-vocational. He works in real estate and runs a boutique alongside his wife. He said the main goal of the church is to help encourage people from the nearby areas to come to Mercy Hill instead of trying to get people from “Tempe, Scottsdale, or Glendale.”
“So 60% is probably Hispanic, 15% is very close to homeless, 10 to 15% college students, and then the rest of staff, and we're probably 70 to 100 deep every Sunday,” Cook said.,
Cook was encouraged by a pastor he used to work for to continue his journey as a pastor while also working a normal 9-5 job. The pastor told him to lead an example of what a Christian is by showing what that is like to people who would normally not go to church that often.
“You get to set the example of what it looks like to just, you know, follow Christ on an everyday basis while working in the workforce,” Cook said.
Another member of church leadership is Dillon Moffett, a worship leader at Mercy Hill. He plays the guitar in the church band and started his faith journey when he attended church with his family every Sunday.
According to Moffett, some of the things that he would do to help out the local community would be to pick up trash and clean people’s yards. His family would also go to church early to help set up for the upcoming service that day.
“I knew that the community based around Jesus is something that I didn't have to totally understand to know that I'd always want it in my life,” Moffett said.
