Phoenix Goes Crazy for Don Toliver’s Psycho Tour

Don Toliver burned down the house during the Psycho Tour Friday, Oct. 18 featuring music from his new album “HARDSTONE PSYCHO” amidst his older hits. Jumping flames, flashing lights and fiery trash cans set the scene, with effects practically singeing the hair off of the audience.

Not a single seat was left open by the time the concert started, and the mosh pit was in full swing. Opening the show was singer Molly Santana (Mya Mini). With colorful lights and lasers blazing, Santana kicked off the show with a bang.

While her brand of music leans R&B, it did not stop the crowd from being rowdy as ever. Her set was relatively short and sweet, leaving a lasting impact on the crowd and set the tone for an electric night.

As Santana left the stage, the crowd broke out in repeated chants of “Ski Mask.” The room was hot with anticipation for the Florida-born rapper.

Instead, a blaring voice came over the speakers proclaiming that the Pink Princess from Houston had arrived.

Monaleo (Leondra Roshawn Gay) took to the stage donned in Hello Kitty slippers and a pink gown, raising the roof as the second opener of the night.

Amid her mix of art pop and rap, Monaleo invited her grandmother on stage, who managed to get the crowd screaming.

Monaleo continued the streak of getting the crowd hype during her set.

After the break, the crowd once again rejoiced as DJ Scheme arrived on stage and announced that he would be DJing for Ski Mask the Slump God, increasing anticipation for the rapper.

To prepare the audience, Scheme paid tribute to deceased artists Juice WRLD and XXXTENTACION, who were both dear friends of Ski Mask.

Following the tribute, Scheme teased the audience that Ski Mask was coming out by having the audience falsely count down to the artist’s arrival.

The anticipation paid off when Ski Mask came out to one of his most well known anthems in “BabyWipe,” this song instantly shocked the crowd. Not a single person could sit down.

Ski Mask entered the stage wearing a giant fur hat, which promptly fell off by the first chorus.

He performed crowd favorites such as “Nuketown,” “Faucet Failure,” “Catch Me Outside” and “Take A Step Back.”

Ski Mask’s set kept the crowd engaged, encouraging the crowd to sway and hold up their phone flashlights.

The ending to Ski Mask’s set was one of the most powerful moments of the night as he closed it with a touching tribute to XXXTENTACION and Juice WRLD, performing “Jocelyn Flores” and “Legends,” respectively.

With Ski Mask’s departure, it was time for Don Toliver himself. Amid a giant chain ball, flaming trash cans and synchronized lights, Toliver began his performance.

Toliver opened with “KRYPTONITE” and “TORE UP,” the two leading songs from his new album.

He also performed covers of tracks he’s featured on, including  “CAN’T SAY” by Travis Scott, “GANG GANG” by JACKBOYS and “Lemonade” by Internet Money.

One highlight of Toliver’s performance was the large sphere on stage, which ended up housing dual motorcycle riders in tandem. The stunts performed rounded out the energy during the concert.

The heat from the flames could be felt all the way in the aisles, and the bass was loud enough to reverberate through iron boots.

An amusing moment occurred when Toliver struggled to get prop shoes on, adjusting them throughout the performance.

To close out, Toliver performed a variety of songs, including his hits “No Idea,” and “After Party,” which were popularized during 2019 and the COVID-19 pandemic. Alongside these he also played Kanye West’s “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” and Travis Scott’s “FE!N,” the latter of which had the crowd chanting the titular word “fein.”

Don Toliver closed the concert with an encore of “TORE UP,” leaving the crowd heated and heading off to his next after party.

The Houston-born rapper has been touring since Oct. 10, and will continue until Nov. 21.
