Donation-Based Yoga for Every Body (and Every Wallet) at a Local Tempe Studio

TEMPE– Arizona Yoga Company, a local studio in Tempe, has embraced a donation-based model to make yoga accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial situation. This community-centered approach ensures that all individuals can experience the benefits of yoga.

Arizona Yoga Co. has evolved into a wellness hub that thrives on inclusivity and collective support. Co-founder Liz Higgins describes it as more than just a business model, it’s a mission to dismantle barriers in the wellness industry and redefine access to practices like yoga.

The first studio that I started my yoga practice at was a donation-based studio,” Higgins said, “A donation-based model means that the practice of yoga is accessible and affordable for anyone who would like to start or continue their yoga practice. It just made sense to adopt this model and have Arizona Yoga Co. be a place where anyone could practice.”

Arizona Yoga Co. operates on suggested donations instead of fixed fees, allowing individuals to contribute what they can. This flexibility removes the financial pressure typically associated with yoga studios where, according to Higgins, drop-in classes often range from $15 to $25, and monthly memberships can exceed $200.

“Yoga should be something that anyone can engage in, and the amount of money you make should not define your practice or your ability to share it with others.” Higgins said.

Yoga student Sarah Phillips discovered the studio while searching for restorative yoga classes. She was drawn to the welcoming atmosphere and its affordability.

“I think my approach to the class was a bit more open minded knowing that I hadn’t paid anything,” Phillips said, “I was just there to practice and do what I needed to do for myself in that space. I think I left with a higher level of gratitude, as I was able to thank the instructor for their time via donation.”

Arizona Yoga Co. has built a supportive and trusting community, where members understand that their donations directly support the studio and its instructors. This mutual reliance fosters a sense of ownership and gratitude among participants.

“The community has been so supportive and accommodating,” Higgins said. They know that the practice isn't free and they know that their donation is an investment in the studio and their own practice.

Beyond its pricing model, Arizona Yoga Co. offers a variety of options to cater to its diverse community. The studio provides in-person classes, online sessions via Zoom, workshops and outdoor practices, ensuring accessibility for those with varying schedules and needs.

“I’m looking forward to the next time I can get in,” Phillips said, “The diversity of what they offer is really awesome, as is the community building aspect.”

Arizona Yoga Co. plans to launch its first teacher training program next year and hopes to expand its offerings to include retreats, additional workshops and potentially new locations.
