On June 24, Camp Flog Gnaw announced it would return for its 10th Anniversary at Dodger Stadium on Nov. 16-17. Tickets instantly sold out upon being released despite fans not knowing who would be performing at the festival.
With months passing by and still no lineup announcement, fans began to speculate about what was causing the delay. Did Childish Gambino getting sick cause the delay? Was Frank Ocean planning an album rollout? Did Tyler, The Creator forget to announce the lineup? In the third week of October, we got all our questions answered.
On Oct. 16, Tyler, The Creator posted a snippet of music on Instagram titled “st chroma,” which was followed by his announcement of his eighth studio album “Chromakopia” the next day. On Oct. 18, Camp Flog Gnaw would finally announce the lineup, just one month out from the festival.
On its 10th Anniversary, the Los Angeles-based-carnival showcased everyone from Playboi Carti to Sampha, Kaytranada, and The Marías. With talent from top-to-bottom, the festival was highlighted by countless special guests, methodic performances, and stunning stage designs.
Here are the 10 Best Moments From Camp Flog Gnaw 2024:
1. Tyler, The Creator Brings Chromakopia to Life
Just three weeks after releasing the album, Tyler, The Creator proved why “Chromakopia” deserves to be the No. 1 album in the world with his star-studded Camp Flog Gnaw performance. In his signature green suit and fitted mask, Tyler garnered the most attended set of the weekend by performing new tracks, including “Noid,” “Darling, I” and “Take Your Mask Off.” The crowd was sent into a frenzy each time Tyler brought out a special guest, including: Sexyy Red for “Sticky,” Schoolboy Q for “Thought I Was Dead” and Daniel Caesar and Doechii for “Balloon.” Tyler went into his bag to finish off the night with fan favorites, including “NEW MAGIC WAND” and “See You Again.”
2. Doechii Caps off a Dominate Year With Help From SZA
If you were not a fan of Doechii before her performance at Flog Gnaw, you sure as hell were after. In tall red heels, the Florida-native brought the swamps to the LA crowd with high energy rapping performances, including “BOOM BAP” and “DENIAL IS A RIVER.” As the sun began to set on Doechii's glowing performance, fellow TDE label-mate SZA popped out to perform their 2022 collab, “Persuasive.” With this performance, it is safe to crown Doechii as the princess of hip-hop.
3. André 3000 Creates a Unique Experience
Hopes of an Outkast reunion came to an end when the set times explicitly stated that André 3000 would be performing his flute album “New Blue Sun.” Despite the 30 minute performance being only instrumental improvisation, 3 Stacks had the Gnaw stage packed with fans taking in the unique experience. Backed by a four-man-band, André would split time between a handful of woodwind instruments while dressed in a dark blue hockey jersey and a bright orange beanie. Fans found a way to open multiple mosh pits, which divided the rest of the crowd in either laughter or distaste. With talks of new André 3000 music in 2025, mosh pits could be more fitting next time around if he decides to return to his roots of hip-hop.
4. The Marías Puts the Audience in a Trance
When the Flog Gnaw lineup finally dropped, no band had as much hype around their performance as The Marías. After releasing their second studio album, “Submarine,” this year, the Camp stage was packed from barricade to the ferris wheel to see what dream pop band had in store. The group found their way to the stage backed by gloomy blue lights and smoke machines while performing “Hamptons.” The collective would primarily play tracks from their new record with a hint of a few older tracks, including “Only in My Dreams,” “Ruthless” and “Cariño.” An unexpected cover of The Cardigans' “Lovefool” gave fans a thrilling moment that sounded just right coming from the fingertips of The Marías.
5. The Alchemist Has a Lot of Friends
Coming off a hot 2024, including three new albums and production credits on Kendrick Lamar's “meet the grahams,” the Flog Gnaw crowd was eager for The Alchemist’s performance to say the least. The set kicked off when Domo Genesis popped out to perform his Alchemist produced track, “F--- Everybody Else.” In a blue Knicks jersey, Action Bronson followed with “Terry” and a cover of his Mac Miller collab “Red Dot Music.” The energy would never come down after Uncle Al brought out Earl Sweatshirt, performing a handful of tracks including “E. Coli.” Earl would bring out friends of his own, including Vince Staples and MIKE to perform their features from “VOIR DIRE.”
6. Sampha Hypnotizes Dodger Stadium
Over the past decade, Sampha has gained a following through his collaborations with some of the biggest names in hip-hop, such as Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West and Drake. While these collabs are what introduced many fans to his music, Sampha has built a tight catalog that is adored by critics and fans alike for his unique voice and heavenly instrumentation. Sampha enticed the fans by exploding onto the stage while playing “Plastic 100°C.” After a thrilling intro, the band played a quartet of tracks from his 2023 record “Lahai,” including “Suspended” and “Spirit 2.0.” Sampha would then give fans their moment while he played a medley of covers, including Kendrick Lamar’s “Father Time,” Kanye West’s “Saint Pablo” and Solange’s “Don’t Touch My Hair.” Capping off the performance with “Blood On Me” gave day one fans a moment they could hold onto forever.
7. Kaytranada Gets the Crowd Dancin’
Clips from Kaytranada’s Timeless Tour went viral all year long for its mind bending visuals that matched his futuristic production style. With a packed crowd, Kaytra played everything from Beyoncé’s “CUFF IT” to Chance the Rapper’s “All Night” and a number of new tracks from his 2024 record “Timeless.” Even if fans did not know all the songs, Kaytranada kept fans engaged with his upbeat energy, iconic dance moves and inviting special guests like Channel Tres to the stage to perform “Drip Sweat.”
8. ScHoolboy Q Cements Himself as Rap Icon
Twenty twenty-four has been a busy year for ScHoolboy Q. He released his most critically acclaimed record “BLUE LIPS,” went on a lengthy tour and supposedly told J. Cole to stay out of the Drake and Kendrick battle. To start off his performance, ScHoolboy Q got the crowd jumping with “Yeern 101,” while explaining to the crowd that there would be “no breaks, straight rapping” during his set. The performance hit a crescendo when he played one of the best songs of the year, “THank god 4 me” while the crowd opened countless mosh pits.
9. Blood Orange Previews New Music
It has been some time since Dey Hynes has released new music under the Blood Orange moniker. Set to be the latest performer on the Flog stage, Blood Orange capped off the night with an unforgettable show with help from background singers, Ian Isiah and Eva Tolkin. Hynes started off the show with the intimate “I Wanna C U,” followed by the groovy “Saint.” He previewed a dynamic new song titled “Inbetween,” that will be a track from an upcoming album. The crowd began to let loose once they played a cover of Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart.” Hynes also welcomed Brendan Yates of Turnstile to the stage to perform their collaboration “ALIEN LOVE CALL.”
10. Playboi Carti Ends the Weekend in Style
Scheduled to play at 10:10 p.m., Playboi Carti did not begin his performance until 15 minutes later. Outlined in a flashing screen that read “I AM MUSIC,” Carti began his set with multiple Instagram-released tracks “H00DBYAIR,” “2024” and “KETAMINE.” The exclusivity of the tracks did not stop the audience from knowing every word and being more wild compared to any previous set of the weekend. The performance and festival was capped off by a surprise appearance by The Weeknd to perform his Carti collab “Timeless.” With the crowd in disbelief, the 10th Anniversary of Camp Flog Gnaw came to an end.
