Almost Monday Blows the Roof off of the Basement at Valley Bar

San Diego based indie-pop band almost monday took to the stage in front of a sold-out crowd at Phoenix’s Valley Bar on Tuesday, Feb. 18 performing one of the final shows of the North American leg of their headline tour, titled the “DIVE” tour.

The band, fronted by Dawson Daugherty with Cole Clisby on guitar and Luke Fabry on bass, played a medley of singles they’ve released over the last few years along with many tracks from they’re recently released debut album, “DIVE.”

The band started their set with “is it too late?” a single off the aforementioned album before following that up with “can’t slow down” the bands most commercially successful song to date, having peaked at No. 1 on the alternative radio Billboard chart, a first for the group.

Other songs peppered through the setlist included the contemplative “life goes by” as well as one of their newest tracks, “holiday,” which was released in late January as part of a deluxe version of their debut album.

The band’s garage rock origins were very strongly felt in the sold out basement of the Valley Bar, where the low ceilings and packed house made it easy for Daugherty’s magnetic charisma to carry from the stage all the way to the back of the room.

Daugherty is simply a guy built for the stage, he bounces around the space with a frenetic energy and moves around like his bones are made of jelly. He feels as though he’s built for a fisheye lens, always taking the opportunity to mug it up for a camera if he sees one pointed at him.

The Bay Area charm coming off the stage was infectious, and even in the heart of Arizona, you could feel the sun soaked vibes that the band's sound is steeped in. They were able to take that basement and make it feel like an arena, and allowed those indie-pop vibes to fill the space.

Overall, Valley Bar was treated to a fantastic show from one of Indie-pops most ascendant bands at the moment and if this recanting of their show caught your attention you can listen to the deluxe version of their debut album, “DIVE,” here.

Blaze Radio’s Colton Phillips-Koch sat down with almost monday in the studio. Listen to the interview here!
