The Swim Club at ASU competed in the 2025 Sun Devil Spring Innovational at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Complex on Saturday, February 22.
The men’s team won with a total of 781 points, defeating second place Grand Canyon University’s score by 315 points. Meanwhile, the ASU women’s team placed second with 357 points following GCU’s first place result with 824.
The pool was surrounded by fans, family and friends of competitors. Expectations were high for coach Nathan Wilson, who was looking forward to a day of personal records and competition.
“It’s warm out, everybody’s high in spirits, the weekend, everybody got lots of sleep. I don’t know, it’s just a great time,” Wilson said.
Being a former swimmer on the team means Wilson connects with members through experience, he said.
Jude Matthew took first place in the women’s 200 yard freestyle. Matthew Girle then won the men’s 50 and 100 yard backstroke events, while teammate Paul Miller captured the men’s 200 yard backstroke. Linus Fischer of UC Irvine was victorious in the men’s 400 yard individual medley.
ASU’s relay teams won the men’s 200 yard medley relay and 400 yard freestyle relay.
“This year we’re gonna try and gun for winning nationals,” Wilson said.
Joshua Hunter, an ASU athlete who raced in the men’s 200 yard medley relay, said he was looking forward to the meet. The community built by the team is what brings their chemistry to life, he said.
“It’s a pretty good day to be swimming with the team… I showed up and swam the best I could at this point in the season,” Hunter said.
Some ASU athletes are now preparing for the 2025 College Club Swimming Nationals, which is being held from March 28-30 in Mesa.
“The team has only grown,” Hunter said. “I can see it growing more in the future, and I think we’re gonna have a great next couple of years.”
