Sister duo Girl Tones performed for a large crowd on March 16 in Phoenix, fresh from a tour in Europe accompanying Cage the Elephant.
Their trip took them from “Paris to Boise,” spanning multiple weeks.
In the few weeks between getting back in the U.S. and going on tour with The Velveteers, Kenzie and Laila of Girl Tones spent their downtime in Nashville, recording new music they hope will come out within the next few months.
They visited Los Angeles and San Diego on tour before ending up in Arizona.
“We’ve been to Tucson, we have family out there, it’s beautiful,” Kenzie said to The Rebel Lounge crowd.
Audience members walked into the venue and were greeted by an immediate view of the stage.
The crowd was split roughly in half, with the under-21 section nearest to the entrance and the other section to the side with a bar.
Girl Tones performed music from their discography, and they also performed unreleased music.
Laila played the drums in the back corner of the stage, taking cues from her sister, while Kenzie kept the crowd’s attention on guitar.
Kenzie’s energetic style, varying facial expressions and ability to work the crowd contrasted with Laila, who kept the songs on track with her beats in the background.
The crowd members enjoyed this unique dynamic.
Camilla, 15, traveled from Colorado to see The Velveteers, but came away with a new band: Girl Tones.
“Yeah, I’m going to check them out,” she said. “They’re sick and they’re cool.”
Jascinda Echebarria, 25 and of Phoenix, also came to see The Velveteers.
But, after Girl Tones performed, she was impressed. She said they were upbeat and more professional than other openers she has seen.
“They were really good, I really loved them. I’ll probably be going home and searching them up on Spotify,” she said.
Girl Tones was accompanied by their tour manager, Meranda Caswell, who has known the duo “for about seven years.”
She also knew their mom, who was “booth buddies” with her at a community farmers market.
“I know whatever it is that they need before they even know what they need,” Caswell said of the duo.
Girl Tones’ tour supporting The Velveteers will continue on to cities such as Dallas, Texas, and Lawrence, Kansas, before coming to an end on March 27 in Omaha, Nebraska.
