DJ Diesel Ignites Devilpalooza with Electric Performance at SDFC Fields

The Sun Devil Fitness Complex Intramural Fields on Arizona State University’s Tempe campus transformed into a vibrant festival ground Saturday, April 5, as thousands of students gathered for Devilpalooza—a night of music, carnival rides, food and unforgettable energy.

Hosted by ASU’s Programming and Activities Board (PAB), Devilpalooza is a long-standing, student-curated tradition that continues to evolve each year, bringing national music talent, interactive experiences, and community excitement to campus—all for free.

This year’s headliner, DJ Diesel, also known as NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal, took the stage with a high-energy set that had Sun Devils jumping in sync under the night sky. Students packed shoulder-to-shoulder as the bass dropped and lights flashed, turning the SDFC Fields into a massive dance party.

Among the crowd was freshman sports business major Melania Mathieux, attending her very first ASU event.

“I am here just for the experience. It’s my first event at ASU, so I’m just excited to be here and meet new people,” she said.

Reflecting on the entry process, she added, “It was so chaotic, the line was not even a line, we were calling it a clump of people. We got in so it worked out.”

Before DJ Diesel took the stage, students were treated to opening performances by Right Rosemary, LIVVIEP b2b PEEJ, and Green Matter. These acts set the tone with high-energy, genre-blending sounds that kept the energy flowing from start to finish.

Adding to the festival atmosphere, Portillo’s Hot Dog Truck made an appearance, satisfying cravings with its Chicago-style classics. A glowing Ferris wheel overlooked the entire event space, offering a scenic view of the crowd and stage, while a swing ride spun students into the air with thrilling excitement. Around every corner were student-friendly touches—free photo ops, giveaways, and a variety of vendors—capturing the spirited, community-driven vibe of the night.

Sophomore student Tim Lamar made sure to attend after hearing about last year’s unforgettable event. “Last year they had Steve Aoki, and he threw a cake at Sparky,” he said, laughing. Though he missed it then, Lamar was excited to experience his first Devilpalooza in person. Especially seeing Shaq perform.

Not every student stuck with their original group, but the night didn’t lose its magic. “I came with a few of my buddies, but I think I lost them somewhere in the crowd,” joked Benjamin Strain, a freshman studying sales and marketing. “Hopefully, they’re not crushed in the pit or something!” Even so, Strain noted the trip from his off-campus housing was worth every step.

The event wasn’t just about the music. The festival grounds were filled with carnival rides, vibrant photo ops, and a wide range of food trucks, giving attendees plenty to explore between sets.

Sophomore Caden Goodman found himself right in the heart of the crowd.

“I somehow ended up in the very center in the front of the mush. My organs are mush now, it means I had a good but chaotic time,” he said with a laugh.

Others, like Vincent Farfan, a sophomore software engineering major, appreciated the improved setup compared to the previous year. “I really liked it. I think it was a lot nicer that it was outside, even though it’s dusty. But it wasn’t as humid and hot,” he shared, recalling last year's venue conditions.

“I think it’s really cool that ASU shows that they’re really using our tuition for more than academics,” Anthony Flores, a sophomore studying electrical engineering said, smiling as he described the fun of coordinating outfits with friends.

Devilpalooza remains one of ASU’s most anticipated student-led events. With its fusion of live music, immersive activities, and a strong sense of Sun Devil spirit, it delivers more than just entertainment—it showcases the energy, creativity, and unity of the ASU community.
