The Golden Eagles got the epitome of the Shaka Smart experience last year, winning championships in the regular season and conference tournament, only to bow out of the NCAAs in the second round. Fueled by the disappointing end to what otherwise was the greatest season in Marquette history, the reigning Big East champions bring back nearly every major contributor from last year. At the head of the revenge tour will be reigning conference player of the year, Tyler Kolek, whose 7.5 assists per game in 2022 established him as one of the nation’s premier point guards. The main beneficiaries of Kolek’s elite ball distribution will be the team’s top scorer from last year, guard Kam Jones, not to mention two-way standout Oso Ighadaro inside the arc. Another year of David Joplin down low and Stevie Mitchell on the perimeter rounds out a rock-solid starting five, and if last year was any indication, the Golden Eagles will be able to score with anyone in their pursuit of another Big East title and a later stay on the dance floor afterward.

The new age of college athletics has brought the transfer portal to prevalence, and its impact might be most felt in the world of college basketball. Of the 15 players to make an AP all-american team last year, 5 of them were transfers. Of those 5 transfers, three of them began their career at a mid-major program, with those being Marquis Nowell, Jalen Pickett, and Tyler Kolek. The abundance of talent that transferred up to power 6 basketball from the mid-major ranks was very apparent last year, as the aforementioned trio of guards in addition to stars like Xavier’s Souley Boum, UConn’s Tristan Newton, Baylor’s Adam Flagler, and Michigan State’s Tyson Walker. It is no different story coming into the 2023-2024 season as numerous players who dominated their mid-major conferences made the jump to power 6 basketball. Obviously, there is an endless list of players that could be mentioned, but these five players are most poised to breakout and lead their teams to new heights.

Joshua Dobbs was drafted to be a backup quarterback. He’s had the career of a backup quarterback, and on the Cardinals, he’s played like a backup quarterback. In just about every passing stat imaginable, Dobbs ranks in the bottom third of the league, exactly what you'd expect from a backup quarterback commanding the ship. After a rough stretch this past month where his QBR was never better than eighth-worst, he was benched and then traded to the Vikings. He wasn’t graded lower mainly because he didn’t have high expectations to begin with but also because he did provide real juice to the run game with his legs. Dobbs was third in quarterback rushing yards so far this season, along with three rushing touchdowns. They’ll have a clean slate with rookie Clayton Tune starting in week nine and Kyler Murray likely taking them the rest of the way.

This past Tuesday marked the official NFL trade deadline, with big names such as Chase Young, Montez Sweat, Leonard Williams, and Kevin Byard being traded. With that in mind, the Buffalo Bills didn’t land as big of a name but addressed a dire need for a depth upgrade at the cornerback position. After losing star cornerback Tre’Davious White for the season in Week 4’s win over the Miami Dolphins 48-20, a move needed to be made. On Tuesday, the Bills acquired cornerback Rasul Douglas and a fifth-round selection from the Green Bay Packers in exchange for Buffalo’s third-round selection in this year’s draft. According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), Douglas provides a clutch factor to head coach Sean McDermott’s defense, having the most interceptions among all cornerbacks in the 4th quarter and overtime since 2021. Will it be enough to salvage the injury-riddled Bills’ defense?

In a season full of chaos so far, Philadelphia feels like the safe pick as the top team in the NFL for at least this week. Similar to their previous matchup in Week 3, the Commanders fought hard to keep it close but were no match for Jalen Hurts officially returning to MVP form. The constant turnovers and defense giving up almost 500 yards of offense to a very mediocre Washington team shouldn’t go unnoticed, however. There’s no understating how important it is for the Eagles to take down Dallas on Sunday if they want to flex their NFC East supremacy.
