This past week college basketball took a backseat with the Super Bowl capturing the world’s attention. But in a year and a couple of months, that stadium that held the Super Bowl will play host to the best event in sports, the NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves though, we still have a season in front of us to finish, and to get the football fans caught up before March, here’s another edition of my weekly winners and losers.
Dave Franco is a man of many talents.
Fans of the Chiefs and Bengals waking up for their morning coffee and reading the headlines are marching to the different beats of a drum. The Kansas City Star headline says in big bold words, “Kansas City Chiefs Headed Back to Super Bowl After Finally Taking Down Burrow, Bengals,” with an image of Patrick Mahomes raising the AFC championship to their adoring fans at Arrowhead Stadium. 588 miles from Kansas City, and directly east of the Mississippi River, the Cincinnati Enquirer is beating its drum on a dismaying and dreary note with the headline saying, “Broken Hearted Penalty Sends Bengals Home, Chiefs to Super Bowl,” with an image of Joe Burrow being sacked by Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones.
Welcome to another week of my winners and losers. I’m going to be honest, this week was hard. There were a lot of winners but not that many losers. The teams that lost, still won at some point throughout the week (i.e. Kansas, Xavier, Texas), so I had a tough time giving them the title of “loser”. And on the winners side there were a lot. Indiana, Providence, and Saint Mary’s, your performances have been noticed. Keep up the good work and someday you can be a winner on this prestigious list.
Phoenix’s first ever Zona music festival occurred Dec. 3-4 at Margaret T. Hance Park, and despite rain and mud, fans still enjoyed great performances.
Winners:
Sophie Powers delivered an electric performance Dec. 6 at the Valley Bar in Phoenix. The singer-songwriter from Ontario, Canada, promised a fun evening for those in attendance — and she did not disappoint. Powers performed at 9:00 p.m. right before the main event, headliner Wicca Phase Springs Eternal, took the stage. However, despite being an opener, she found a way to raise the crowd's energy and get them invested in her performance.
Arizona senator Kyrsten Sinema has changed her party affiliation. Formerly a member of the Arizona Democratic party, Sinema has announced that she feels her viewpoints are better represented by the bi-partisan Independent Party. This switch comes following a recent disconnect between Sinema and the Democratic Party on multiple issues, primarily related to the government spending budget. Sinema has been critiqued by Democrats and those on the left for opposing an end to the filibuster and voting against social spending packages.
Ziggi’s Coffee located in Tempe near the Arizona State University campus will have to make between $60 and $65 per employee working to keep the shop open.
The DUSK Music Festival rhapsodically captured the minds of concertgoers over Veterans Day weekend in Jácome Plaza, the heart of downtown Tucson. The festival was headlined by performers Young the Giant, GRiZ, NGHTMRE, Sofi Tukker and Alison Wonderland.
Local bands do it best. The Tucson musicians known as The Basements have already achieved greatness after making their debut onto the Tucson music scene just a short while ago. Winning the 2021 DUSK Battle of the Bands competition, this band is prepared to go up against some of the best, and they are only gaining momentum as they continue to release new music and expand their live performances.

Arizona has been amid a heated battle for Governor between Kari Lake and Katie Hobbs since former Arizona Secretary of State Hobbs won the Democratic primary and Lake won the Republican primary on August 2, 2022.
The Tempe Sports Complex is alive the night of Oct. 21. The stage is bathed in neon lights and the music floats over the sea of people sitting on the grass and mingling in the beer garden. The scents of fried food waft towards the stage from the food trucks on the far side of the field. The children walk away from the tie-dye tents, triumphantly holding their dyed T-shirts for their parents to see.
At Cesar Chavez High School, former president Barack Obama told an audience how crucial it is to vote in the upcoming November 8 Election to preserve democracy and civility.
Following the Attorney General debate on Sep. 28, it is clear that Republican candidate Abe Hamadeh and Republican Senate candidate Blake Masters are cut from the same cloth. In an attempt to win over a hesitant moderate voter base, both Trump-endorsed contenders are softening their extremist rhetoric, reflecting the GOP’s desperate move to switch up its narrative.

Bruce Lee was a visionary film actor who helped define what an action movie was. Though Lee passed away in 1973, his practices and on-camera stunts are still used in the film industry today. In Arizona, his methods are beginning to take root.
